چکیده

________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The prosodic structure of French involves a tight connection between the location of prominent syllables and locations where the flow of speech is divided into prosodic units. Researchers agree that the final (full) syllable of the smallest prosodic unit is prominent. The possibility remains that other syllables or words may be emphasized that do not precede a prosodic boundary. This paper examines cases from two radio broadcasts where emphasis is found without a boundary, and illustrates some prosodic modifications that speakers use to create emphasis with or without boundaries. The data demonstrate that emphasis is not tied to a specific phrasal position, even though words preceding a boundary are more prominent than other words. Acoustic Correlates of Listener-Identified Boundaries in Spontaneous French Speech

Prosodic structure provides an organization to spoken (and signed) language that signals the grouping of words into phrases, and the relative prominence of words and syllables (e.g., ShattuckHufnagel and Turk 1996). This organization is cued by articulatory and acoustic modifications to the signal. Different languages modulate different dimensions of the signal in different ways, but prosodic v...

Disfluent Lengthening in Spontaneous Speech

We investigate lengthening in spontaneous speech with the aim in mind to use it as a time-management strategy in incremental spoken dialogue systems. lengthening is a common feature of speech, occurring regularly near the edges of intonation phrases. It behaves similar to disfluencies when it occurs in places remote from phrasal boundaries. Disfluencies have proven useful in incremental spoken ...

Perception of Prominence and Boundaries by Naïve French Listeners

French phrasal structure is described as based on an accent group in which the final (non-schwa) vowel receives prominence by virtue of its position in the phrase. This co-occurrence of prominence and phrasal boundaries was verified experimentally by testing the perceptions of untrained participants. The listeners demonstrated a strong tendency to mark as prominent those words immediately prece...
